Hari Narke, the vice-president of Samata Parishad and a scholar noted for his studies on Jyotirao Phule and B R Ambedkar, died Wednesday in Mumbai after a heart attack. He was 60. Narke, a native of Pune, was receiving treatment at the Asian Heart Institute. He’d been sick for almost a year. Chhagan Bhujbal, a leader of the NCP (Ajit Pawar group) and a close acquaintance of Narke, said the ideologue’s death was a significant loss for the state’s progressive activities. “Those who follow the Phule-Shahu-Ambedkar path have suffered an irreparable loss.” He was a pillar of strength for the OBC group and the Maharashtra progressive movement. “He was an outspoken advocate for the rights of marginalized and oppressed communities,” Bhujbal added.
Narke has written numerous works about Mahatma Phule and edited Mahatma Phule: Samagra Vangmay. He was a former member of the Maharashtra Backward Class Commission and the Mahatma Phule chair professor at Savitribai Phule Pune University.
