Pedophile David Renz killed a mom and raped child after removing ankle bracelet

A convicted rapist and murderer has said he was only able to commit his horrific crimes because he could take off his ankle monitor without authorities noticing.

David Renz was sentenced to life in prison without parole last year after murdering a librarian and raping her ten-year-old daughter in Syracuse, New York.

Renz, 31 - who was out on bail at the time for suspected child-pornography offences - admitted carjacking Lori Ann Bresnahan, 47, and her young child on March 14, 2013.

According to Syracuse.com, in testimony given in a videotaped deposition at Wende Correctional Facility in Buffalo in April this year, Renz said he would have been unable to commit the atrocities if probation workers had realised he was repeatedly tampering with his GPS tracker.

The evidence was taken as part of a $110million lawsuit against the federal government by Bresnahan’s estate on behalf of the child victim.

Renz said he was able to take off the device ‘ten to a dozen times’ without hearing from federal authorities.

When layers asked if he could have murdered Bresnahan if officers had kept a closer eye on him, Renz said: ‘Most likely not.’

He discovered he was able to disable the bracelet just four days after he was bailed on child pornography charges in January 2013.

As a condition of his release, he was instructed to keep the monitor on at all times.

But he said nothing happened after it came off by accident as he moved boxes into his mother’s house.

He reported the incident to his probation officer Steven Acquilano – who allowed Renz to watch as he reattached the device instead of making him look the other way.

In the weeks that followed, Renz, who was born with a facial deformity, took the monitor off a number of times and reported that he only heard from authorities on one occasion.

This gave him the confidence to keep going – and he went and bought zip ties, a ski gun and an air gun while unmonitored.

On the night of the murder, Renz dismantled the bracelet, reassembled it and left it on a bed in his mother's home in Cicero before going to the Great Northern Mall in Syracuse.

Authorities said he entered the victims' car armed with what appeared to be a handgun, bound Lori Ann Bresnahan and her daughter with zipties, and sexually assaulted her daughter in the back seat.

He stabbed and strangled Lori Ann - who worked as a librarian in the Liverpool Central School District - as she fought to stop her daughter being raped.

The mom and daughter had just got into their car after a gymnastics class when Renz opened the back door and and sat on the back seat.

He later got into the driver's seat and drove it to a quiet road in Clay. After the 10-year-old girl manged to escape from the vehicle, Renz fled but was captured on a road later that night.

A federal investigation revealed that Renz's probation officer received 46 alerts indicating that someone was tampering with his monitor over a period of six weeks.

At the time, Syracuse was the only federal probation office out of 490 in the country that routinely ignored alerts shorter than five minutes.

But according to court records, ten of the ignored alerts from Renz's device were for periods longer than five minutes.

Those involved in his case have since been fired or demoted.

Renz was also sentenced last year to 30 years in federal prison for possessing more than 11,000 images and 1,100 videos of child pornography.
